Director Ruben Fleischer, starts off pretty poorly thanks to bad writing and a focus on its two least appealing characters, unfortunately played by the top-billed Jesse Eisenberg and Danny McBride. A slacker (is that term valid for this generation?) who drives like Mario Andretti (is that reference too dated as well?), Nick (Eisenberg, who’s a long way from his Academy Award nomination) is forced by two fledgling criminals, Dwayne (McBride) and Travis (Nick Swardson), to rob a bank after they strap a bomb to his chest. Nick enlists the help of his best friend, Chet (Aziz Ansari), but runs afoul of loco Chango (Michael Pena, who nicely tweeks a stereotypical role). A pretty girl (Dilshad Vadsaria), who happens to be Chet’s twin, is endangered as well. Early scenes lifelessly roll by with likable comics spouting unfunny, raunchy, hip to be unemployable dialogue. Fortunately, the silly central conceit kicks in, and the '80s action/comedy homage eventually creeps above weak to average status. Special thanks to Ansari and Swardson; the two supporting players are given the movie’s most likable characters and generously respond by supplying the bulk of the laughs. A BETTER LIFE (PG-13) After writer-director Mike Mills (not to be confused with the R.E.M. bassist) returns for his first fictional feature since 2005 with this family dynamic drama about 75-year-old Hal (Christopher Plummer), who decides to confess two secrets to his grown son, Oliver (Ewan McGregor). First, Hal has terminal cancer. Second, he is gay and has a younger lover. Hal sounds like a plum role for Plummer, who is aging wonderfully. With Melanie Laurent and Goran Visnjic.
