Bay hit six in first half to climb table
WHITLEY Bay FC made it 13 goals in the space of seven days against STL Northern League division one basement side Stokesley SC on Saturday.
Following their 7-2 victory over the same opponents in North Yorkshire the previous weekend, Bay fans were looking forward to another feast of goals and they were not to be disappointed.
The game had been underway for less than a minute when the home side took the lead.
Straight from the kick-off they went on the attack and won a corner on the right.
David Pounder delivered the ball into the goalmouth where Phill Bell rose to head home.
Stokesley tried to get back into the game but Callum Holbrook’s effort flew high and wide of goal.
Whitley enjoyed the majority of possession and Lee Kerr twice went close – one effort was saved by the keeper while a free kick sailed over the bar.
At the other end, a good attempt by Paul Grier drifted wide of the target.
Whitley nearly added to their lead after 20 minutes when Paul Chow’s attempt from Pounder’s free kick was put behind by a defender.
Then a great run and cross from the right by Bell left the visitors defence struggling but Chow somehow scooped the ball over the bar from less than six yards.
Lee Paul Scroggins joined in the attack and sent a shot just past the post, but the pressure told with 26 minutes on the clock with a goal identical to the first, as Bell headed home another Pounder corner.
Two minutes later it was three when Stokesley keeper Paul Hubbard failed to hold a Gareth Williams cross and could only divert the ball into his own net.
It was all, and when Bell was fouled just outside the penalty area it looked the perfect position for Kerr to curl the free kick into the top corner, but Hubbard did well to push the ball over the bar.
With 38 minutes gone, after good approach work, Paul Robinson squared the ball to Scroggins who lashed a fierce shot beyond Hubbard for the fourth.

Selby criminals get the Birch - North Yorkshire Police
Operation Birch, which was launched in June 2011, aims to reduce crime and the fear of crime by targeting criminals operating in the area and offering a reassuring police presence to the community.
Since the beginning of the operation, officers have been paying particular attention to policing the roads in an effort to deter travelling criminals visiting the district to commit various offences ranging from poaching to scrap metal thefts.
The initiative began with a day of action on 21 June and continued with another targeted operation last Sunday (17 July), with local officers supported by the North Yorkshire Police ANPR team and Trading Standard visiting a car boot sale at Whitley.
The ANPR team stop checked 19 vehicles as they patrolled the A19 from 8am until 12pm. Six of those vehicles were seized for having no insurance, one man was arrested for driving without insurance and eight people were reported for summons for road traffic offences.
At the car boot sale itself, Trading Standards officials carried out a series of test purchases and are following up a number of leads as a result of their enquires.
The mobile police station also visited the car boot sale, with officers on board to offer crime prevention advice in support of Operation Haven - a forcewide anti-burglary campaign - and information about joining Neighbourhood Watch and Rural Watch.
During the afternoon, officers headed to the south of the district to link up with Rural Watch members for targeted patrols in isolated areas.
A high-visibility police presence was on show in and around the villages of Eggborough, Whitley, Beal, Kirk Smeaton, Little Smeaton, Womersley and Walden Stubbs.
Two vehicles were stopped in Beal and officers gathered valuable intelligence about other vehicles frequenting the area.
Sergeant Jackie Booth, of Selby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "Operation Birch has been a great success so far. I am delighted with the response from the community and partner agencies who are all working with us to reduce crime in Selby District.
