Shade but no rain on CJD's Grand Parade
Even better than sunny skies for Saturday's Chief Joseph Days Grand Parade was a big black storm cloud that stationed itself over Joseph to provide shade for the colorful two-hour event.
"We got a very good response on the parade this year. Everyone seemed to like it," said parade chairman Pearl Sturm.
She noted that the cloud, which produced only a few drops of rain after the parade was over, arrived just in time to keep the spectators and paraders from getting too hot.
There were 94 entries signed up for the parade this year, and both sides of Joseph Main Street were packed with people for eight blocks.
Sturm said that there was a positive response to The Glory Riders of Oregon from Hermiston, a riding group dressed in red, white and blue leading the parade with numerous American flags. The Glory Riders were first in the Riding Group category.
"Cowboy Spirit" was the theme of the Grand Parade this year, and the vivacious Wallowa Mountain Red Hats group, riding on hay bales on a flatbed trailer, won the parade theme category.
Among the thousands of visitors to Wallowa County for the big rodeo celebration were Matt and Karen Alandt of Boise, Idaho, who praised CJD while waiting for the parade to start. "It is awesome," Matt Alandt said. "We went to Nampa Stampede this year, and Chief Joseph Days is a hundred times better. The atmosphere, everything, is better."
