Is It Dandruff? Treating a Dry, Itchy Scalp

It’s embarrassing to admit, but when the cold winter air moves in, my scalp starts itching. No one ever wants to admit they have a dry, itchy scalp (or heaven forbid, dandruff!) but it’s really no different than how our arms and legs react to the cold weather. With depleted moisture in the air, and bad winter habits like frequent hot showers, we’re all at risk to get dry skin just about anywhere… including underneath our hair.

Still, those flakes on your shoulder are not very attractive at all. I mean, who wants to ruin a nice, black party dress with a little dandruff? But sometimes, it’s not dandruff at all…

Why Is My Scalp Dry?

We’ve come to use ‘dandruff’ as a catch-all term, but in reality, other things can cause itching and flaking. When that scalp starts itching, it has probably been getting dry for a little while. Identifying the cause of your dry scalp is the key to treating the problem. Sometimes, it’s eczema, a skin condition linked to allergies that may require additional treatment. An itching scalp can also be caused by dietary deficiencies, food allergies, cold and dry weather, over washing, or the wrong hair care products. Other times, your skin just needs a good moisturizer.

What Can I Do for My Dry Scalp?

The first thing you may do is reach for that anti-dandruff shampoo. In most cases, this will help you get some relief, at least at first. If your dry skin is caused by environmental factors or your hair care habits, however, you might discover the dandruff comes back as soon as you stop using it! This usually means there’s something else at play. If that’s the case, it might want to try some of these other remedies. You may need to make a few adjustments to get complete relief.

Go Natural

Sometimes, a dry scalp is directly linked to the products you use to wash your hair. Several common ingredients in hair care products and shampoos have been shown to cause dryness. Look for the chemical ingredients Phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, DEA, MEA, TEA, and artificial fragrances, which can cause irritation, itching, flaking, and dryness. Alcohol, commonly found in shampoos, is also over-drying to the scalp and skin in general. Switching shampoos to a more natural alternative could help cure and prevent dry, itchy scalp. You may have to read a lot of ingredient lists, but you should see quick relief if that's the root cause of your dryness. Look for formulas that contain tea tree oil, shea butter, and urea—a combination that soothes, restores, and moisturizes the skin on your scalp.
