School district enrollment holds steady

The St. Joseph School District saw a slight increase in student enrollment this year. Seventh-day enrollment numbers for the 2011-12 school year released Wednesday showed enrollment crept upward by three students, bringing the total so far to 11,453.

Elementary enrollment increased by 32 students, middle school enrollment increased by 82 students, the high schools decreased by four and alternate program numbers dropped by 107.

The district experienced a drop of 137 students the previous year. The district had its highest total over the last 10 years in 2002-2003 with 11,689 students. In that period, enrollment fluctuated from a low of 11,348.

“When you look at the last several years, it appears that we are fairly stable, ranging from the 11,300s to the 11,600s,” said Dr. Melody Smith, superintendent of schools, from a press release. “We’ll take stable.”

More school coverage

Doug Flowers, district human resources director, said he’s stopped predicting student enrollment. He said demographic studies show the enrollment should remain consistent, if not add a few more students in the next several years.

“But with the economy, you never know where people will land and so I found it’s probably fruitless on my part to try to attempt to guess on the number of students changing from one year to the next,” Mr. Flowers said.

High school enrollment totaled 3,237, down four students from last year. Benton’s seventh-day enrollment was 864 (up from 853), Central’s was 1,507 (down 54), and Lafayette’s was 866 (down three).

Middle school enrollment increased by 82 students to 1,811. Bode’s enrollment number was 522 (up seven students), Robidoux has 372 students (up 44), Spring Garden has 420 (down four) and Truman has 497 (up 35 from last year).

Enrollment in the district’s 16 elementary schools increased by 32 students, to 6,226 students.
