'Rio' is worth the trip
N today’s family-fun animated flicks, viewers might find it hard to tell which talking animal is on what adventure.But, filmmaker Carlos Saldanha’s (“Ice Age”) latest, “Rio,” stands out with a lovable bunch of tropical birds, a lifelike rendering of Brazil’s lush landscapes and a terrific soundtrack.
Rio is the story of Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg), a blue macaw living a domesticated life in Minnesota. With his species bordering on extinction, he is brought to his native Rio de Janeiro to mate with Jewel, a free-spirited female macaw (Anne Hathaway).
The two are kidnapped by black-market animal dealers, and a romance blossoms between the two as they work together to escape.
All of this takes place, of course, during Carnival. This means lots of rump shaking — by humans, birds and a pack of gangster monkeys.
The film tracks all the expected plotlines of recent computer-animated comedy-adventure movies, but it goes one step further with its star-studded songs featuring Taio Cruz, Jamie Foxx, Jemaine Clement (“Flight of the Conchords”) and will.i.am.
The DVD extra features take you in the studio with will.i.am and Brazilian bossa nova veteran Sergio Mendes — and you’re given a unique juxtaposition of how a renowned new-school beat maker operates versus an old-school musical legend.
That is just one part of more than an hour of special bonus features, including the Rio de JAM-eiro Jukebox featuring music videos for the movie’s hit songs and a virtual tour of Rio via short clips, pictures and interviews with Saldanha — a Rio de Janeiro native.
The DVD’s exclusive levels and characters for “Angry Birds Rio” soars. I’d rather just play “Angry Birds Rio” instead of watching “Rio,” and that’s not a stab at “Rio” — “Angry Birds” is addictive.
