Tips from recovering shopaholic Jill Chivers

The world's Carrie Bradshaws and Rebecca Bloomwoods can tell you that there is no addiction as pretty in pink as shopping. None with as much glitz or glamour. None that look good, period. And none that sound less like something that needs a "cure." So why are women around the world flocking to Jill Chivers to break this beautiful habit?

Well, because shopaholism is real and it happens to every one, says Chivers.

The shopping doctor, who is in San Francisco speaking at corporate conferences, launched My Year Without Clothes Shopping , the first online step-by-step program for retail addicts, in January with a goal to "rehab" 1,000 women all over the globe. Her approach is straight-forward: tackling the emotional motivations, finding ways that women can satisfy those cravings without a Visa, and shopping your wardrobe.

You can have all your doubts about the program and even about the crazy idea that shopping can actually be considered an addiction, Chivers says, but she knows—been there, done that. In fact, the former shopaholic from Down Under was her own test subject, having gone through the program's prototype version in 2010. Of course, she didn't know then that she'd be eight months shopping-sober more than a year later.

That year she cleaned out the closet, literally, selling and giving away most of her items, all of which were housed in a second-bedroom-turned-wardrobe. (Believe it or not, Chivers has had more extreme cases—one My Year Without Clothes Shopping member converted her basement into an overflow closet.)

But "shopping your wardrobe," the program's catchphrase, doesn't mean no shopping at all. It's the type of addiction where "clean" is not squeaky clean, because that would be impossible. According to Chivers, you're always going to have a fashion transformation whenever you have a major change in your life—entering the workforce, marriage, having children. This means that there will inevitably be events you have to attend that call for outfits you don't have.
