Nothing could mar our excitement as the aircraft made its final descent to the French Riviera. Two years ago we acquired our delightful sea-view apartment, with its secret courtyard that is a haven from the heat of the midday sun. We were oblivious to anything that could possibly cast a shadow on our contentment. Unfortunately, it was one of the wettest early summers on record for the Mediterranean and this provided perfect conditions for the emergence of the dreaded anopheles mosquito later in the year.

By the time I had decided it was necessary to declare war, the shelves had been raided. Every man for himself! I reflected upon my friend’s advice later while weeding the garden plants. I noticed that the resident lizards, to whom I had not extended the hand of friendship, were not visiting as they had when the garden was wilder and reptile-friendly. My relief turned to regret once the mosquito army appeared, and nothing I did could combat their deviousness or persistence.
Swimmers began to reveal red, telltale blotches; evidence of the invasion. Covered in bites, I rushed to the pharmacie for antihistamine treatment and a spray as deterrent.
