Five Great Reasons Why the Nintendo DS isn't Dead Yet

It's all doom and gloom for the Nintendo 3DS these days. The price has already been cut; investors want Nintendo to start developing for smart phones (fat chance), and the fall lineup is looking more barren than ever. Are you really that excited about another Mario Kart?

While the 3DS struggles though, the Nintendo DS is quietly having a very solid year. Beginning with Radiant Historia and Pokemon Black and White, the DS has since seen the release of such gems as Okamiden and Ghost Trick. And that's in addition to an already incredibly strong library.

You can see the difference between the Nintendo 3DS and the DS in the fall lineup. In an effort to revive the 3DS' fortunes, Nintendo is mostly sticking to established franchises like Mario. Over on the DS, the release lineup is full of the little gems that have come to define the system over the years.

So while none of the Nintendo DS games listed below got a mention in our fall preview, it would hardly be fair to call arguably the best system of the past generation "dead." On the contrary: the DS' "last hurrah" looks to be far more interesting than the 3DS' supposed coming out party. Here are a few games you should be watching out for.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 : Between the remakes and last year's Dragon Quest IX, the Nintendo DS lineup has been like mana for Dragon Quest fans. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 continues the trend with gameplay that could best be described as "Pokemon with the monsters from Dragon Quest." And in the best tradition of Pokemon, it includes competitive battling (though the appeal is probably more in the single-player). It's a fan favorite over in Japan, and adds another very solid RPG to the Nintendo DS lineup.

Kirby Mass Attack : Given that Kirby: Canvas Curse was one of the first games to show off the potential of the Nintendo DS stylus, it seems only appropriate that Kirby would again appear to bookend the handheld's lifecycle. Kirby Mass Attack is a fun take on the series that requires you to use multiple Kirbys--up to 10 at once--to solve challenges and defeat enemies. I played it and enjoyed it not too long ago; and like Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2, I think Kirby Mass Attack has a good chance of being another high quality spinoff for a venerable franchise.
