Merkley Bill Aims To Stop Rural Post Office Closures
Jeff Merkley Oregon Senator introduced a bill in the Senate Thursday that would prevent the U.S. Postal Service to close some rural post offices.
This summer, the U.S. Postal Service announced it would seek to close 3700 post offices as a way to reduce costs. Many of those in rural areas. On a conference call with reporters, Merkley said his bill would prohibit the Postal Service to close a post office if it would mean the closure of a distance greater than 10 miles to the next.
Merkley said 36 of the 41 post offices under consideration in Oregon would create this situation if they were close.
"Anyone who has traveled many a small town realizes that the post office is the hub of community life and is a vital communication link. And we need to ensure that everyone has access to the post office "said Merkley.
The protection of rural post offices act, as it is called, has the support of Democrats and Republicans. Peter Hass, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, declined comment. He said the agency has not had time to examine the contents of the legislation.
