Connecticut Governor Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Irene

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has declared a state of emergency in Connecticut as the state prepares for the effects of Hurricane Irene.

The declaration signed by the governor on Thursday gives him powers including the ability to order evacuations and direct civil preparedness forces into action.

Malloy said he decided the measure is necessary because of the projected storm path that threatens a direct hit on Connecticut over the weekend. He said it will help officials react more quickly in the event of a serious event.

Connecticut residents stocked up on generators and other provisions Thursday as officials warned they should prepare for potentially prolonged power outages from Hurricane Irene, which threatened to dump up to a foot of rain on this already saturated state.

Tsunamis 125 feet high and traveling 300 mph devastate everything in their path, hurling ashore coral blocks weighing up to 900 tons, and killing more than 36,000 people. The mean temperature of the Earth lowers one degree for the next two years, eventually recovering to normal almost five years later.

Hurricane Andrew made its second landfall near Burns Point, Louisiana as a category 3 hurricane. Morgan City recorded sustained winds of 92 mph with a peak gust of 108 mph. Hammond, Louisiana was deluged with 11.92 inches of rain. Late on the 25th, one of Andrew's rainbands spawned an F3 tornado which tracked 9 miles from Laplace to Reserve, Louisiana. This tornado killed 2 people and injured 32. 6 other people were killed as a result of the hurricane's second landfall and total damage was 1.8 billion dollars. As the Andrew moved inland and weakened, he spawned 47 tornadoes from the 26th to the 28th from the South to the Mid Atlantic states. -Elko, Nevada dipped to 20 degrees to set not only a new record low temperature for the day but also a new record low for the month of August.
