Quantico training boom brings in more Marines
MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. — Deep in the woods northwest of main side, here at Camp Upshur, a technological revolution quietly has been taking place. Weeds and brush on the grounds of the old Officer Candidates School have been cleared to make room for modern white trailers and tents where more than a dozen training simulators hum and spin for Marine reservists training for deployment.
In the past year, the number of shooting, driving and convoy simulators has more than doubled. By early 2012, there will be enough racks to house more than 1,000 Marines in training.
Upshur’s offeringsHere’s a look at the simulators at Camp Upshur, aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., as well as some improvements:
The indoor simulated marksmanship trainer , or ISMT, is the newest of the simulators and was scheduled to open Dec. 5. A popular simulator at major bases around the Corps, the ISMT is an indoor range with a variety of video scenarios where Marines can practice firing the 9mm pistol, M16 automatic rifle, M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, M240 medium machine gun, the MK19 grenade launcher and .50-caliber machine guns. The ISMT also has a call-for-fire scenario for mortarmen.
Coming online in early 2012 will be two deployable virtual training environment simulators , or DVTEs, which simulate combat, driving, calls for fire and other scenarios, delivered on laptops.
The virtual combat convoy trainer , or VCCT, is a mock-up of a Humvee inside a reconfigurable training pod with a 360-degree video panorama for a realistic drive through a landscape or city, such as Fallujah, Iraq. Marines in each trailer can communicate with the trailer next door as the vehicles “move” through the scenarios, and they can see what each Humvee is doing. The camp added four VCCTs last year, boosting the total number to eight.
