'Living' History Tour Of Lake Forest Cemetery

The Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society presents a dramatized tour of the Lake Forest Cemetery. Hear fascinating stories from the past that lie behind the monuments and markers. Community leaders and noteworthy personalities come back to life to tell their stories. Featured characters include:

John Griffith, who founded John Griffith, Inc. and helped develop Market Square Grace Witbeck Barrell, who donated the cemetery gates in memory of her son, John, who drowned at the age of 24 Reuben Sandy, a World War I Army corporal who fell victim to the worldwide influenza epidemic of 1918 Marion McKinlock, whose son Alexander was the first man from Lake Forest to be killed in World War I Samuel Dent, an escaped slave from Alabama who established a livery business here in the 1870’s Sylvester Lind, a founder of Lake Forest and four-time mayor Grace Durand, founder and proprietress of Crabtree Farm, the dairy in Lake Bluff Mildred Lydia Birchman, an orphan at the Methodist Deaconess Orphanage

Tickets are $15. Tour times will be assigned at the time the reservation is made, at 15-minute intervals starting at 2 p.m.; allow 90 minutes for the tour. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Historical Society at 847-234-5253 or visiting www.lflbhistory.org . The tour will begin at the Historical Society, 361 E. Westminster, and busses will take participants to the cemetery. The tour will take place rain or shine.

This educational and entertaining program is a wonderful way to take a step back in time and discover new things about our community. The 129-year old cemetery features examples of all period design styles, from Neo-Classical to Art Deco, Louis Comfort Tiffany to contemporary sculpture.

Local residents Anne Pollock and Regina Lind have reprised this popular event. Their team of actors, scriptwriters and docents combines to help bring history alive.
