Good Morning, Buffalo

We aren't entirely done with showers and thunderstorms, the National Weather Service says. A follow-up to last night's deluge is due to arrive late this afternoon, but it shouldn't be as intense and not everybody is expected to get it. Until then, we should have sunny breaks, temperatures in the upper 70s and increasingly strong west winds.

Once tonight's storm threat subsides, it's pretty much clear sailing all the way through to the middle of next week. Lots of sunshine and totally dry weather is expected here for the weekend while the East Coast braces for Hurricane Irene. Meteorologists say the only effect Irene will have on us is to draw in some cooler air at the beginning of next week.

Highs in the upper 70s are forecast for Friday and Saturday, with overnight lows ranging from the upper 50s on the Southern Tier to the low and mid-60s in the Buffalo metro area. Afternoon temperatures should fall back to the mid-70s Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. All in all, it should be a gorgeous weekend.

It also should be a beautiful weekend for the Great New York State Fair in Syracuse once the rain goes away. Gov. Andrew Cuomo visits this afternoon. Grandstand attractions at 7:30 p.m. nightly include Maroon 5 and Train tonight, Ne-Yo and Cee Lo Green on Friday, Selena Gomez and the Scene on Saturday and Three Doors Down on Sunday. The fair continues through Labor Day.

Other Democrats from across New York State will gather in Pettibone's Grill at Coca-Cola Field this evening to pay tribute to outgoing Erie County Democratic Chairman Len Lenihan. Lenihan officially steps down on Friday to take a post in the state Democratic organization.

Expect to see more pictures of the renovations at the Statler Towers and hear more tributes to developer Mark Croce after the media, community leaders and folks associated with this weekend's Buffalo Irish Festival get together for a preview party and tours of the place this evening. The public gets its chance to see the grand old hotel coming back to life, starting Friday, when the three-day Irish Festival opens.
