Detroit Pistons veteran Ben Wallace to start at power forward against Houston ...
HOUSTON – Ben Wallace will start at power forward for the Detroit Pistons tonight, with Jonas Jerebko coming off the bench, in an 8 p.m. game against the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center.
Head coach Lawrence Frank made the announcement about 90 minutes before tipoff, and said it would not be a multi-game experiment, as the Pistons try to find ways to improve their first-quarter and third-quarter defense, balance out their first and second units, and save Jerebko from early foul trouble.
“It's to set a defensive tone, bring some toughness, to take
the challenge against some of these front-line guys, and also to see
if we can have better balance with our second unit, as well,” head
coach Lawrence Frank said.
Wallace, 37, had started 901 of his 1,039 career games entering Tuesday, so the role is nothing new, nor is what he brings to the Pistons: defense and rebounding.
“I'm going to go in there and try to set the tone in the post, protect the paint, force guys to play out on the floor further than they're used to playing, and just try to be that defensive anchor,” Wallace said.
Frank said the switch is “by no means” a reflection on the 24-year-old Jerebko, who had his best games in Detroit's three victories, but has had inconsistent swings on both ends of the floor, many of them prompted by early fouls.
“Jonas is a guy that brings a lot of energy to the game,” Wallace said. “Sometimes, his energy gets him into early foul trouble, which is not a bad thing; as his career goes on, he'll be able to control it, and basically pick his spots a little bit better. But in no way, shape or form do we want him to slow down and stop doing what he's doing right now. We still want him to come out there with that same type of energy.”
Frank said he expects Wallace to play the first six minutes of the game, after which the Pistons will settle into their regular rotation. Wallace will return in the second quarter, then play with the starting group again in the third quarter, Frank said.
