Athenian Vase Painting - Greek Black and Red Figure Pottery ...
In the sixth century, artisans in the region of Athenian Ceramics has taken the lead in the export of Greek pottery and perfected the technique. In black figures, the detailed modeling of the interior of the figures is made by etching, which allows a complex figurative composition. Women are still portrayed in white and black men.
The red-figure technique was developed around 530 BC. and came to replace the black-figure technique. The quality of craftsmanship in figural vase paintings began to decline throughout the fifth century, and in the fourth century it was given up entirely.
Francois Vase
The vase is named for its discoverer Alessandro Francois. Signatures cite Klitias as the painter and Ergotimos as the potter. The scenes, rendered in the black-figure style, depict the heroic adventures of Theseus and Achilles.
Odysseus and the Sirens
Changes in vase painting techniques meant that instead of first tracing the black figures, the entire surface of the pot was covered in glaze, leaving only the figures bare. The interior details were no longer etched in glaze, but could be painted in, which allowed for a more fluid style. Signatures appear on the more beautiful vessels, naming both the painter and potter. This stamnos by the Siren Painter shows Odysseus and the sirens, a scene from Homer’s Odyssey about his journey home after the Trojan War.
How Greek Red-Figure Vases Replaced Black-Figure Vases
Retro seems to be the in thing these days. There are retro sports jerseys, shoes, video games, movies, etc. What was old is new again. Some wall decor, such as wall vases, celebrates retro artistic styles. While some styles are traditional, others are so retro that they borrow styles from ancient Greek pottery. After Greek vases first began to flourish, they began using the black-figure technique. However, Greek pottery would continue to evolve.
