Some stay home; others travel for football camp
->Area high school football teams open practice next week, with some staying at home and others travel to the camp.
Matt Humbert Ringgold will begin his second season at the helm of the Rams, taking his team to Cal U.
"I think it's good to get away," says Humbert.
Humbert is eager to see the position battles taking place in full pads.
"When you get into your carpet and we will full contact is a horse of a different color," says Humbert. "It will be interesting to see how children react when someone hit them in the face."
Twenty-three first-year students will take part in the Rams camp, and Humbert is curious to see how they do it.
"We had a lot of nuances in the camp of the road in our mini-camp last week," says Humbert. "I want these freshmen to get a taste of how we conduct our practices from the beginning."
Ringgold is highly praised in the WPIAL Class AAA ranking this season. Last season, the Rams rolled to a 9-1 record, losing to eventual champion Central Valley in the playoffs.
For Monessen Andy Pacak, there is no place like home for the first week of camp.
"Of course we are going somewhere to camp," said Pacak. "We're going to Memorial Stadium."
Pacak, the longest in the valley of the coach owner, is looking forward to getting down to business Monday.
"We have to replace about 98 percent of our offensive production last season," he said. "We went pretty hard in shorts, but now it is time to put the pads on.
"I'm looking forward to it."
The forecast for the first days of camp have high temperatures in the 70's and low 80, and Pacak is not sure how to feel about it.
"It's kind of funny, because last time it was nice that way for the camp, he was always hot and humid for the first weeks of the season," he said. "It will be nice not to have the hot weather."
Greyhounds, the defending Tri-County South Champions, should be near the top of the conference again this season.
