Notes from Houston vs Texas Scrimmage - College Baseball Daily

Texas started Kevin Lusson at 1B. Lusson spent most of last season backing up 3rd and catcher. Only 2 newcomers were in the starting lineup for the Longhorns. Fr. 2B Brooks Marlow and Jr. DH Landon Steinhagen. Sam Stafford only pitched an inning, but still looked strong. Getting him back was a huge positive for the 2012 Longhorns. Ricky Jacquez only pitched a pair of innings, but struck out three batters and looked better than any other pitcher today. Should see a lot of time in 2012. Texas hitting didn’t look much different from last year. They did enough in the beginning to get on the board, and their pitching kept them in front. SR RHP Austin Dicharry had a nice outing for Texas. Dicharry looked like a star as a freshman, but injuries have taken away the past two years for him. Two glaring questions for the Texas lineup are 1B and the depth at C. Kevin Lusson and Alex Silver split time at 1B, but neither has seemed to win the position yet. SO Jacob Felts is the starting catcher, but whoever will back him up is unknown. FR Hunter Redman saw action behind the plate in the second half of the game today. Houston looks to have a lot of question marks with their team right now. Albeit, they are a mostly new team, they had some struggles at the plate and on defense. The Cougars have 20 newcomers out of 34 players currently on their roster. 1B Casey Grayson has been a solid player for Whoa Dill at Navarro JC, and looks like he will continue that success at Houston. RHP Jared Ray had a nice outing, holding the Longhorns off the board in his two innings of work. Errors got Houston into a lot of trouble today. Everything from dropped fly balls to misplayed bounces plagued the defense. A bright spot was 3B Wes Theiss who had a solid game on the hot corner, and 1B Casey Grayson who converted a double play with a diving grab of an Erich Weiss line drive in the first. Didn’t see much power from either team today.
