B.C.'s Harden dominates in Toronto

Who's next?

Rich Harden of Victoria, B.C. dominated the Blue Jays for seven innings allowing one run and striking out eight in a 4-1 Oakland A's win on Aug. 9.

The right-hander did the same when Toronto was on the coast ... 11 strikeouts in seven inning in a 2-0 win.

And Jeff Francis of North Delta, B.C. making his first start in his home and native land put up six zeros as the Kansas City Royals beat the Blue Jays 9-6 before 17,355 fans at the Rogers Centre.

Who's next. The Tampa Bay Rays, this weekend's visitors have released reliever R.J. Swindle of North Vancouver. Next team into the Rogers Centre are the Boston Red Sox. Think lefty Erik Bedard of Navan, Ont., will start one of the four games?

Canadians seem to enjoy the Rogers Centre mound.

How rough had August been for Francis?

Well, he was 0-3 in four August starts allowing 19 runs in 20 2/3 innings (8.27) ERA on five walks and 36 hits.

None of that on this night as Francis struck out the side in the fourth fanning Adam Lind, Brett Lawrie and after a walk J.P. Arencibia too. Two innings later after a lead-off double by Jose Bautista he fanned Lind and Edwin Encarnacion.

The Jays had three hits, including an Eric Thames triple, off Francis when the bottom of the seventh. Kelly Johnson collected his first hit as a Jay and Arencibia followed with a two-run homer to left centre.

For Arencibia it was his 20th homer of the season and to tie John Buck for the franchise's all-time catching home run record.

GIFT WRAPPED

Billy Butler hit nothing but rockets, save for when he hit line drives in the first two games of the series. So, the Jays must have seen in shock B.C.'s Harden dominates in Toronto sports to see him bloop a ball down the right field line into no man's land. Right fielder Jose Bautista was charging in and Kelly Johnson was going out hard. The ball fell in between the two and first base ump Scott Barry got the call right ... fair ball, the ball bouncing into the seats for a ground-rule double. Two outs later, Mike Moustakas singled to centre to put the Royals ahead 2-0 ... Butler was 8-for-15 with four doubles, a homer and five RBIs on the series. Turn the page on that scouting report ... Arencibia dropped a foul pop up behind home plate in the top of the ninth. Moustakas then doubled in a run against left Rommie Lewis ... The Royals scored two unearned runs as a result.
