Introduction to the GSA Schedules

The GSA Schedules are usually the easiest way for a U.S. federal agency to buy the products and services it needs. And buy they do – to the tune of more than $40 billion spent in fiscal year 2010. Consequently, the schedules are a huge and vital business opportunity for thousands of companies.

Yet, for every company that has successfully positioned itself to take advantage of this market, there is one that failed, and more that haven't started.

Over the next four weeks, we'll educate you on the ins and outs of the schedule program through our GSA Learning Series. The series will culminate on September 14, with a webinar hosted by expert guest Pat Morrison , Director of Client Services at Washington Management Group , who has spent 30 years helping companies tap the GSA schedule market.

Register for the webinar here , and feel free to submit your questions early in our GSA Schedule Discussion Forum.

What Are the Schedules?

The General Services Administration is a government agency that exists to help other government agencies spend money. It maintains real estate and fleets for most federal agencies, and operates the GSA Multiple Award Schedules program – informally known as the GSA Schedules.

The GSA Schedules are essentially pre-negotiated contracts between vendors and the federal government. Legally structured as Indefinite-Delivery, Indefinite-Quantity (IDIQ) contracts, they allow multiple government agencies to buy products and services from a company without entering into a new contract.

GSA Contracting Officers negotiate a price list with the company, then publicizes it to government agencies who might want to buy.

There are 40 separate schedules, covering everything from IT Consulting and Programming ($15.7 billion in spending in FY 2010) to Furniture ($900 million) and Hardware Supplies ($600 million).

How Do You Get On A Schedule?

A company can apply to be listed as a GSA Schedule vendor by responding to a GSA Schedule Solicitation . There is a separate solicitation for each schedule.
