Wings of Hope to support research for pancreatic cancer

Castle Pines councilmember Maureen Shul remembers family members lost to a deadly disease with Wings of Hope, a benefit to support research for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. Shul has lost two family members to the disease and enlists the help of surviving family members to raise awareness in the fight against pancreatic cancer.

Wings of Hope is sponsored by the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, a national organization creating hope through research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure. The event is at 6 p.m., Oct. 22, at Wings Over The Rockies Air & Space Museum, 7711 E. Academy Boulevard, Denver, Colorado 80230.

Guest speaker for Wings of Hope will be SR-71 Pilot Brian Shul, brother of Maureen Shul and author of the nationally acclaimed Sled Driver. A highly sought and inspiring speaker throughout the country, Brian Shul will share his inspiring story of being shot down in Vietnam and left for dead, only to go on to fly the Top Secret Blackbird, the world’s highest, fastest and most extraordinary aircraft ever built.

Wings of Hope is being organized and hosted by Maureen Shul in honor of her mother and brother whom she and her brother Brian lost to pancreatic cancer. While Mayor of the City of Castle Pines, Maureen Shul was constantly at her brother Victor’s side from the time of his diagnosis until his courageous battle with the disease ended four years later in May 2009.

Five months after losing her brother, Maureen Shul’s mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, this in addition to the Alzheimer’s disease she had been diagnosed with eight years earlier. Three months later Blanche Shul passed away from pancreatic cancer, never cognizant of the fact that her son had succumbed to the same relentless disease months earlier.

Propelled by grief and a desire to honor her brother and mother, Maureen Shul would like Wings of Hope to help raise more awareness and research funding to fight pancreatic cancer.

Photographer, author, pilot and showman Brian Shul shares stories and photos from his experience as a "sled driver" - an SR-71 Blackbird pilot. The presentation is based upon his book, "Sled Driver," which features Shul's dazzling photography and insightful prose to illustrate what it is like to fly the world's fastest, highest-flying jet, the SR-71 Blackbird. Shul's program includes riveting accounts of Mach 3 runs over hostile territory and stargazing at 80,000 feet. This marks the 19th year Shul has appeared at the Museum during Blue Angels week. Shul has also traveled the air show circuit with the Blue Angels for his book "Blue Angels: A Portrait of Gold.
