Clansthal Conservancy beach walk this Sunday
The Oceanographic Research Institute is currently conducting a survey about the collection of East Coast rock lobster, mussel, oyster, mud crab and bait species like sand and mud prawns.
They want to use this information to estimate the number of animals collected in KZN, to improve resource management and the quality of fishing. Anybody in possession of one of these permits can complete the survey by going to www.ori.org.za There are also several prizes up for grabs, details are on the ORI website. Something to look forward to this weekend is the Clansthal Conservancy Beach Walk on the south coast this Sunday 28 August. Tickets will be on sale from 6.45am and the walk starts at 7.30am at a cost of R20.00 per person. The distance is 10.3km. Everyone will meet on Scottburgh Beach and walk to Umkomaas. There will be transport to take you back to Scottburgh beach from the halfway mark and from Umkomaas. It is open to anyone who wants to enjoy our beautiful coastline and get some exercise. There will also be lucky draws and refreshment stands along the way. It is organised by Liane and is not to be missed!
Yesterday there was a report from a Toti resident Donald that a small net of sardines came out on the beach in front of his house yesterday. There is not much to report for surfers today with strong onshores gusting up to 34 knots today so rather sit tight and wait for the SW and catch up on work today... and stay tuned tomorrow for an angling update.
Lipton Cup 2011 Update: Light and fluky winds and a night time finish! With light fading and mist rolling in from the ocean, all eyes were on the lead yachts and everyone was wondering if the boats would have to finish in the dark after sailing the compulsory 12 nautical mile, rectangle course. Lipton Cup is unique as there are three compulsory courses that have to be sailed for the Challenge to take place. These are a rectangle, a sausage and a triangle and were specified in the original deed of gift, over 100 years ago. Chatting with birthday boy, Brennan Robinson, who turned 23 today and is sailing with his brother Ricky on Royal Natal’s Orion B2G2, I asked him what would be the perfect birthday present? Needless to say, his answer was a win, but more importantly to beat the team sailing Point Yacht Clubs entry, PYC Element, helmed by yesterdays winner, Luke Wagner. These two teams have a healthy rivalry and are both hoping to be the team that brings the Lipton Cup back to Durban, after an absence of 8 years. The weather today was very light and racing only got under way around 3pm in very light conditions. With courses specified at 12 miles, it was a long day on the water for the teams who had to constantly change gears as the battled the unstable wind conditions with the wind constantly shifting. In these conditions it’s vital to stay with the lead pack and today it was defending champion, Greg Davis, sailing Knysna Yacht Club’s Colorpress that managed to use every puff and wind shift to his advantage and got out front early and led the entire race.
