Mice Return to Submarine
The very first Royal Navy submarine, Holland 1 will be reunited with her mice crew as part of a family event - Captain Mouse on Thursday 25 August at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport. The mice themselves and other furry friends will be on show, alongside storytelling performances by one of England's best known storytellers Red Phoenix and crafty activities making mouse mask workshop.
Three white mice were taken onto the first British submarine, Holland 1 to act as test for carbon monoxide. The first submariners did not have any other means to test for the highly poisonous gas when they were dived.
Jackie Edelman, Events Organiser said. "Families often find the presence of white mice on Holland 1 really intriguing. Now they can find out how important they were to members of the crew."
The magical tale of the three mice that lived on Holland 1 will also be told on the day by Red Phoenix who has created a special one off performance for the Captain Mouse event. On the day, families can also set off on our special mousy trail to find the mouse that left his life at sea to join the landlubbers, design a humane mousetrap and create their own mouse mask. Visitors will be able to handle the real mice, along with friends, Rat, the Guinea Pigs, the sizzling cockroaches and a white rabbit from 1.45 until 2.45p.m. All these creatures have sailed alongside the crew on various patrols.
Captain Mouse is a family event that is part of a summer holiday season of extra free activities that have taken place throughout August at the Submarine Museum in Gosport. The Museum is open every day and a visit includes a tour of the historic WWII era submarine - HMS Alliance with a submariner to hear his stories first hand about living beneath the waves. Visitors can also peer into the only surviving WW2 midget submarine, step inside the Royal Navy's first submarine Holland 1 and play as pirates in the Skull and Crossbones exhibition.
