Merging two art forms
Belly dancing and capoeira do not have much in common but they're being successfully combined in one performance.
Glen Innes belly dancing teacher Dallia Amoutzias and capoeira practitioners Umit Soydinc and Miguel Sant'ana are performing together at the Viva Eclectika competition this weekend.
Capoeira is a Brazilian art form that combines martial arts, dance and music.
The biennial competition encourages different cultures to fuse their dance and music styles.
The trio came together because of their involvement with a Buddhist group.
"We're all about humanity and bringing people together and working together," Ms Amoutzias says.
It has been no easy task merging the two art forms, Mr Soydinc says.
"It's really difficult to mix this dance because my capoeira is really fast and jumping around."
Ms Amoutzias says they have used steps and music from both cultures to tell a story about the battle between light and dark.
She says the exercise is very much about learning from each other although they have not mastered each other's skills – she is happy to leave the cartwheels to the men.
Ms Amoutzias is confident the trio may be able to win the competition, although that's not the ultimate goal. "Most important is to bring the joy and the hope to people."
The competition is held by the New Zealand Asia Association and the New Zealand Diversity Forum.
This year's prizes total more than $4000.
The competition is at 7pm on Saturday at the Dorothy Winstone Theatre at Auckland Girls Grammar School.
